3 Book Recommendations for Fans of Historical Fiction
Hi there! Welcome back to Everything Ami. For my first official post I’d like to talk to you guys about one of my greatest loves: books. Admittedly, I don’t always read as much as the romanticized version of me does but I’ve purposefully been trying to make more time for it since spring of last year. Of the 13 books I managed to read last year, there was one recurrent book genre that I found myself gravitating to over and over again: historical fiction. If you’re like me and love historical elements woven into fictional stories then read on ahead for the 3 book recommendations I have for fans of historical fiction!
The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova is for fans of Dracula and geography. The book is split into three parts/narratives that follow our characters throughout Eastern Europe in their quest to get answers for earlier disappearances. This quest becomes the more ominous and dangerous when their journey crosses paths with the historical stomping grounds of Vlad the Impaler.
The Danish Girl by David Ebershoff is based on the life of Lili Elbe as she navigates through her adult life and marriage to painter, Greta, all while keeping a secret from Greta and the world. She eventually embraces this secret and ultimately decides to live life as her authentic self, but that doesn’t mean that life is always smooth and easy for Lili. And yes, there is a movie based on this book which is also quite good.
Before We Were Yours by Lisa Wingate is a moving account of five siblings who grew up along the Mississippi River with a happy life until they were illegally taken from their parents and separately adopted to other families. Loosely based on the real life horror that was the Tennessee Children’s Home Society orphanage, the book follows the story of present day characters and the ties that bind them to their troubled past.
I hope the brief descriptions tug at your curiosity enough that you may consider adding one of these books to your reading list this year. I’d love to hear if you end up reading one (or all!) of these books, or if you’ve read them already, what your thoughts are. Let me know if you guys like book/reading posts so I can make sure to give you more recommendations!
